Philosophy Reminder: Prepare for the most likely scenario first. For example,
it is more likely that you will experience a flat tire and need a flashlight,
than an earthquake scenario. So start
with a flashlight and gloves first and build from there.
Scenarios:
Minor car problem – You may
need to use a flashlight, tools, flasher, gloves, or a garbage sack to kneel
on. .
Generic problem – You may
need Gatorade if someone gets dehydrated or a poncho if you get stuck in the
rain.
Get to Home – In a
severe emergency where you are unable to drive to get home. An earthquake may
damage roads to where you will need to leave your vehicle and travel on foot.
If you travel frequently, or work farther way, you will want to add more food, water, perhaps an emergency bivy for travel that may require more than one day to get home.

Cost
While you will not want to put expensive gear into your car kit which may
go unused for years, you also want things that will be of good enough quality
to function correctly. For example,

My wife, has asked for some adjustments to her kit.
Food – Have both a long term and a short term packet. The short term would be recycled regularly - Candy bars, gum, etc.
Bag - something non-descript - will fit in the door of the car, has a shoulder strap.
Visor
Mini multi tool with scissors
Feminine hygiene items
Medication
*Items that
are in my everyday carry backpack
